I owned some domains before which I never renewed and clearly they've not been sold yet since they're on the market. Is it possible to negotiate ownership back to myself without necessarily paying a huge premium on them?

If the domains you let go have not been registered by anyone, you can purchase them again as a new registration. However, if since releasing them they've been registered by another person, that person has the right to sell the domain at their chosen price. (GoDaddy does not set the price.) A Premium Domain - whether it has a website or not - can be purchased at their set price. The only other option would be to use the Domain Broker Service to negotiate the purchase privately for you, at your best offer price .
