Remaining years in domain

Apologies for newbie question.

I bought my domain via hostgator. It is valid till 2020. I want to transfer it to godaddy.

When I try to transfer it, why do I see a dropdown menu with number of years? Does this mean, I have to pay for the domain every year after I transfer it?

After I transfer it to godaddy, do I have to pay for the privacy feature again? I have already paid hostgator for this.

Greetings, @anita1, we appreciate the question. In general you can add time to your domain at the time of transfer as long as you don't exceed 10 years (a registry limit). When you order a transfer you get a year added when the transfer completes as long as you haven't renewed in the last 45 days.

As for privacy, that is proprietary to each registrar, so unlike previously registered time, we cannot recognize another company's privacy service.

I hope that helps,
