Why are characters added to domain name? ie "xn" & :bed"

Hi @puravida

 

Thank you for your post. That would be an example of an IDN (International Domain Name) that uses special characters in the domain. The format you see with XN-- is called puny code and can be used to translate the domain into its IDN format.

 

For example, the IDN domain 

xn--coacecss-en-liquidacin-la-verdad-bed.com

would be translated to 
coacecss-en-liquidación-la-verdad.com

 

Notice the accent in "liquidación"

 

When someone registers a domain they cannot register with these characters or accents and so a puny code system was made to allow these formats for those who wanted to use them.
