Wordpress: reverts to simple blog (2020) regardless of template selected

I've new to Wordpress hosting, purchased a hosting package for a car builders club I'm in.

Clicking Install wordpress goes fine, when I select the Template ('Drive' from Automotive & Cars https://ie.godaddy.com/wordpress-themes/automotive-and-cars), it builds away in the background, and a few minutes later comes up... with a simple blog based on the 2020 theme!

I deleted the site, and started again, and exactly the same thing happened, a beige blog.

I spent 30 mins on the phone with a guy from support and he unhelpfully suggested that maybe that theme wasn't available on Wordpress hosting, that it was a Web Hosting theme. It appears to me that he's clutching at straws. Anyone seen this?

Re: Wordpress: reverts to simple blog (2020) regardless of template selected

Still no idea what happened, I deleted and recreated my site twice more, and at the 4th attempt, I was able to set a different theme. Not a great start to my experience, and a bit of a black mark to support who were 'looking into it' since Friday, haven't heard a peep from them.

Cheers for the help @MrVapor

That's a new one. I would try disabling the theme in your File Manager.

  • Go to your server file manager
  • look for your WordPress installation
  • find the wp-content folder
  • find the themes folder
  • rename all the themes except the one you want to use

If that doesn't do the trick, I'm not sure without peeking under the hood.

Re: Wordpress: reverts to simple blog (2020) regardless of template selected

I certainly like the approach. Here we go; installed 'Velux' which is a derivation of 'Primer'. Then deleted the 4 blog templates 2020, 2019 etc.

Flipped to Primer, then activated Velux again to be sure. Aaaaand somehow, it's still showing 2020.

I selected a template 'Drive' initially, and now I can select themes within that, but I still seem to be stuck in a a weird loop where I must have this hideous plum coloured blog for my membership site.

Frustrating. Tempted to simply ftp into it and upload my own, just not trusting the control panel.

I'm honestly still flummoxed as to what would cause that. Maybe a CDN caching issue if you use one? I dunno.
