How to add a Counter to my website?

I'm new to the internet and webdesign.  I needed to go online due to Etsy's prices are outrageous!  (I started there but it's .20 to list THEN when someone buys an item you're charged the fee PLUS .20 for each item.  SO if someone orders 10, which happened this is how I know, it was 3.50 for item then another 2 for renewal for EACH order; even though it was the SAME order!)

    My question is:

How do I add a counter to the website.  That way I can tract or have a count for each person who visits my site.  Kind of like eBay has the counters when someone looks at your listing.

    Thank you....

Look into Google Analytics (http://google.com/analytics). Free to install, you can find LOTS and LOTS of useful tracking info.

It doesn't show a counter on the site ("xxx visitors so date") but that's not really necessary anyway. The value is in getting the data so you can see what site visitors are looking at, and how they are looking at it.

@JnJFarmKY:  Sorry! To the non-programmer I'm sure it DOES look like a foreign language.

Fortunately, it's not as bad as it looks. Google Analytics will generate a few lines of code that is unique to your website. You need to copy that code, and then paste it into your website in a location that is either in the header or footer on each page. I don't know how your site is implemented, so would need to know that to tell you exactly how to do that.

If you're using WordPress, there are a few ways to do it, but see this great article: http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-install-google-analytics-in-wordpress/

This article has a very good explanation of the first part (setting up GA) so you can use that to get started even if your site is implemented in another way.

If you're using Dreamweaver (or something similar) and have a library (shared) file in the header or footer on each page, you can put it there. Here's one article, I'm sure there are more: https://www.geckodesigns.com/tutorials/dreamweaver-tutorial-add-google-analytics-using-dreamweaver/

It's like reading Ancient Greek, a bunch of words with no meaning.  HOW do I add it to my site?

Re: How to add a Counter to my website?

I use StatCounter It's free and you will see the number of visitor to your site as well as where they came from including referring url. You can get html code or WordPresss code. even place a counter on your site, but I would not recommend it. They will help you install the code. Time to learn something new Smiley Wink

    @webdiva, @Oniram,

Why do you not recommend putting the counter visibly on the site? Thanks!

Re: How to add a Counter to my website?

What is your objective in displaying a counter?

f the counter is so that you can see how many people visit your site, you get that (and much more) through Google Analytics and similar tools.

If your intention is to impress new visitors with how many previous visitors your site has had, don't bother. Those numbers are so easily manipulated, that the data does not mean anything. Some of the older-style tools even let you set the starting number. So if you set it to 5000, then after 2 visitors, it says you have had 5002 visitors. That's neither realistic nor useful. When I see those counters on sites, and expect they are inflated, that just makes me distrust the site owner.

Re: How to add a Counter to my website?

It is my preference not to show the total number of visitors to my sites. It just seemed that by showing my visitors stats in detail that they will see where people are coming from, which includes their visit and could make them concerned about privacy.

StatCounter has change its options such that you can show the number of visitors only without them accessing your stats.

Re: How to add a Counter to my website?

I can add that the instructions on the the StatCounter website concerning how to insert the code are some of the best.  I've not tried doing so on a GoDaddy site before and it was simple. Thanks!
