View the contents of a folder from a browser.

    Hello,

I'm a photographer and use some of the extra space within my website hosting package to create folders for clients so they can view their photos. After I create their folder and upload their images, I email them the link to their folder so they can see all the images and can click on each one to view or download. I use an ftp client from my computer to create the folder and upload the images but when I attempt to view the contents of the folder in my browser, I get this error message:

    "Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /(my folder name)/ on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

I'm new to goDaddy so not 100% sure what I'm doing wrong. Creating the folder seems easy enough, and uploading the files, a piece of cake, but viewing the contents, not so good. Can anyone help?

Oh, and I'm a far better photographer than I am a coder, so simple would be best here, Thanks.

Re: View the contents of a folder from a browser.

Thank you for the link, @susanmarksphoto Susan. After reading through it I found the the path to the answer I needed and it works perfectly. Here's what I did.

I named a folder "bob" (my client) plus some number sequence, and put it in the same directory as the files and folders of my website. I created a text file and typed "Options +Indexes", then saved it as ".htaccess". I placed that text file in the "bob (plus some number sequence)" folder and BAM, now all the files can be seen. All I have to do is send bob the link to the "bob (plus some number sequence)" folder and he can see the entire list of his images. He can click on whichever one he wants to see and/or download it.

The "bob (plus some number sequence)" folder isn't linked in any way to my website, it just sits in the background where all my other clients folders will sit. Each client will be emailed a link to their own folder and never be the wiser to the other clients. It ain't a pretty system, but it's super-easy to manage. Thanks for your help.

BTW, I clicked on the link to your photo website, very nice!

Awesome!  I'm glad it helped - and I enjoyed your site also!  Just a quick tip outside of Go Daddy, you may want to use Adobe or other program to include meta for the background info on your photographs for copyright - just a thought. This becomes more important on social media.  Here is a link that may help:  http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/2015/05/quick-tip-adding-copyright-and-contact-information-to-photograp...
