Multiple sites on same cPanel and redirect question

Hello,

I recently migrated my Wordpress-hosted domain to a cPanel domain. I have two domain names. I added the second domain that was the Wordpress site as an addon. I have it ready to go, except that when I visit the site, it still goes to my Wordpress site. I created a whole new site and want that to show up.

I don't know what I am doing wrong.

The Wordpress site is still up and running as well as the WP Admin. I am afraid to remove it because I don't know if the cPanel one is going work. I am so confused. This is my portfolio and I need it to be up because I am applying to jobs right now.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Multiple sites on same cPanel and redirect question

Hi @MissFrijole,

There's a bit more to the wp setup in subdirectories/subdomains.  The concept is that you have to make your subdirectory look like your root/primary in terms of .ini and .htaccess files.  Additionally the wp-config file needs to be inspected for proper path settings.

If you are running on SSL (recommended) you will need to properly install the certificate.  GoDaddy does not support adding SSL's to multiple sites, but basically you have to generate you certificate, download it, go to your cPanel, and upload it.  After that you have to have an .htaccess redirect added so that all versions of your domain resovled the correct domain/directory name.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.yoursite.com/$1 [R,L]

You will also need to check you A record for the DNS on your wp subdirectory site.  Make sure it is correct.  If you are running mail with wp on that server you MAY have to add an MX record.

Here is a good link with an pretty good step-by-step description of how it works.

https://www.godaddy.com/garage/enable-https-server/

https://www.godaddy.com/garage/how-to-add-ssl-and-https-to-wordpress-in-3-steps/

I've recently been through a bit of this so I know it can be a bit confusing.

Let me know what else I can do to help!

Re: Multiple sites on same cPanel and redirect question

Hello,

I appreciate that explanation, however, I do not wish to keep my site as Wordpress. The original plan was to move my domain from Wordpress hosting to cPanel hosting. Now I had to add my main domain as an add-on domain, which I don't like.

Since I set up a redirect in an effort to override the wordpress, nothing is working now. My site won't come up. I have to wait another day for the redirect to go away.

Re: Multiple sites on same cPanel and redirect question

Hi @MissFrijole,

My mistake, I thought you were going the other way.  Are you using cPanel to run WP or moving completely away from WP?  If you are moving completely away, once again check you .htaccess file to make sure that there are not any wp remnants left.

Hope this helps,

James

Re: Multiple sites on same cPanel and redirect question

Hi again,

I was able to figure it out. The solution was simpler than I expected. I uploaded the new site information to the add-on domain and took the bold step of completely removing the WordPress site. I got the result I wanted, which was that my new site was visible.

I appreciate your comprehensive help, though!

Thanks.
