I have a hosting account with GoDaddy but no domain name. In the cPanel it says the site address is 22.214.171.124 and visiting http://126.96.36.199/ shows a placeholder page.
I uploaded a test index.html file to the public_html folder, but visiting http://188.8.131.52/index.html continues to take me to the placeholder page. I tried putting the index.html file in a variety of other folders but no matter where I put it I can't access it or any other file I upload.
Which directory should I upload my files to so I can access them on the website?
Are you sure your new home page is named index.html? The index.html file currently showing is definitely their temp page. If your page has some other (legitimate) home page name such as index.php or index.htm, it still may not show up as long as the index.html file is still there. The browser looks for the home page with one of those names in a particular order, and index.html is going to show up before any of the others.
If your page is really index.html, just look for the GD temp page and overwrite it.
public_html should be the correct directory.
I've put various other files in the public_html like test.jpg but if I visit http://184.108.40.206/test.jpg I get "Page not found". I tried resetting the account but that didn't help, and no matter what I put in public_html I can't access it.
I think I must have it setup wrong so I've reset the account again. I'm now prompted to setup a new cPanel and am shown this screen:
I don't have a domain registered with GoDaddy so when I set it up previously I clicked the "Enter domain" and typed one in. What's the correct way to set it up so that I can access files from the http://220.127.116.11/ address?
I tried putting other files in the public_html folder, such as a test.jpg file, but I can't access those either. What's also strange is that if I delete the default html and css files in the public_html directory (so the folder is totally empty), the placeholder page still appears.
I reset my account again and got a new IP address, but I still can't access anything I put in the public_html folder. I can only think I'm doing something wrong when I setup the hosting. During the setup process I get this screen:
Since I don't have a domain registered with GoDaddy I click the "Enter domain" and type in a domain I have registered with another provider. I don't know if that's causing something to go wrong.
How should I setup the account so I can access files I upload from the ip address given in the cPanel?

What's also strange is that if I delete the default html and css files in the public_html directory (so the folder is totally empty), the placeholder page still appears. In fact I just tried deleting all of the files and folders and the placeholder page still appears. No matter what files I put in or delete, it seems to make no difference.
I reset my account again and got a new IP address, but I still can't access anything I put in the public_html folder. I can only think I'm doing something wrong when I setup the hosting. During the setup process it asks me which domain I want to use, but since I don't have a domain registered with GoDaddy it says "No available domains". There's a "Enter domain" option so I press that and enter a domain I have registered with 1and1. After that everything sets up, not nothing I upload to the site is accessible from the given IP address (which is now 18.104.22.168 after the reset).
How should I setup the account so I can access files I upload to the site?
I'm uploading via the cPanel. The directories it creates by default are:
I'm putting the files in the public_html folder. I've currently uploaded a test.jpg and test.html files, which show in the file manager as being in the public_html folder. However, if I visit http://22.214.171.124/test.html or http://126.96.36.199/test.jpg it just says "File not found".
I might have to give them a call since I have no idea what's going wrong.
The GoDaddy support helped me sort it out. The problem is that the ip address is a shared with other sites so you can't access your files directly from that ip address. The site therefore isn't accessible until you link it to a domain by changing the DNS A address for the domain.
I've done that so it's all working now. Thanks for the help.
