Confession time: The first time I tried to invoice customers, way back in 2008, I downloaded a template from a popular word processor and sent this sad little generic document off as an email attachment. From there I waited around, unsure if my client had even seen my invoice in his inbox — and hoping she would find the time to send me a check soon.

Needless to say, this old-fashioned process was far from from ideal.

I can’t count the number of times I forgot if I’d even sent the invoice and had to go double-check that the client even knew I was waiting on a payment.

Thankfully we now have modern technology to invoice customers! With invoices in GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping, intrepid entrepreneurs can:

  • Enter a new client into the system easily, and from there, invoice with just a few clicks.
  • Create professional invoices that showcase your brand at every customer touchpoint.
  • Easily include extras like sales tax and discounts.
  • Give your customers a variety of payment methods to choose from.
  • Customize invoice terms for every client.
  • See every outstanding invoice on your dashboard at a glance.
  • Automatically send reminders to clients that invoices are due.

In other words, it’s a whole lot better than sending an invoice out into the universe and making a wish. Here’s how to get started invoicing like a pro.

2. Create settings

If you are a first-time user, you will be asked to quickly and painlessly create settings to invoice customers. You can set up defaults — such as net-30 or net-60 payment terms — and your preferred payment methods (including PayPal, Stripe and Dwolla). You can also do fun things like add your logo and choose a custom template. I love the “Mod Squad” template, but there are plenty to choose from to complement your brand!

3. Create an invoice

Now you’re ready to invoice customers! Just head back to the Invoices tab, and then click Create Invoice. You might need to enter new clients, but that’s as easy as clicking Create a New Client at the top-left of your invoicing page.

4. Enter details

From here, just enter the itemized work you’ve done. You can even customize invoice numbers and due dates, add attachments, and even and link expenses if you are asking for reimbursement.

You’ll notice that invoicing with GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping has other robust features.

You can include percentage-based discounts and even sales tax if you sell taxable products. There’s also so a spot to add payment terms and any notes you might want to send to the client.

5. Pro tip: Create items

Save time by creating items. If you invoice customers for the same thing over and over again — such as $300 for a blog post or $19.99 for a T-shirt — create items by going to Invoices, and then clicking Items. This saves keystrokes and allows you to quickly and easily enter products or services as line items into your invoices.

6. Choose a payment method

As a final step before sending, you can limit which method with which you’ll allow your client to pay, or give them options.

7. Ship it

Click Send by Email. With that, your invoice will be whisked off to your client. Now all you have to do is wait for the money to land in your account. Easy!
