Recommending Website Security

Once a website gets launched, security can be an afterthought. According to a report last year from Sucuri, about 15% of people who build websites for clients don’t ever mention website security. Some 6% don’t bring it up until after the site gets published. Recommending website security can fall by the wayside.

In a way, that makes sense. When a client just spent a good chunk of change on their website, they could freak out if additional expenses come up. But is that really the ethical way to handle it?

The right thing to do is giving the client a head’s up that their new website isn’t secured and encouraging them to address it. If you offer security and maintenance as a service, this would be a good time to bring it up. And if you don’t offer it, you could still recommend a provider.

The key aspect here is establishing website design and security as completely separate services. That should set the expectation you’re only offering advice, not taking on the responsibility of securing their site.

Email template for recommending clients consider website security

Hello,

Congratulations on your new website! I’m so excited we got it launched.

Just a head’s up, though: My services did not include website security. That’s something I encourage you to consider as soon as you possibly can.

While website security isn’t a service I offer, I still felt it necessary to bring it to your attention. There are many providers out there, offering website security at all kinds of price points.

I suggest you search for reviews, and then sign up for a website security plan as soon as possible.

Best,
