Last week’s J and Beyond, the Joomla!® community event, brought more than 200 attendees to Königstein, Germany, for three days of technical presentations, development and sharing (and maybe a little fun). This year’s theme was “Investing in our Future,” and the presentations mirrored the approach. Here is event organizer Brian Teeman’s keynote, which focused on the themes of getting real work done in the form of development, bug squashing and documentation.

Teeman’s comments make a very good point: although getting technical work done at the conference is important, it’s not enough. Momentum in a Web development community comes from broad, sustained effort in all areas, including marketing and outreach. More importantly, he noted, the work doesn’t end when the conference does. Even a few hours of support from community members over the course of a week adds up to hundreds of hours of effort for the project over the course of a year. His presentation was just one of 48 sessions at J and Beyond, and the conference did a great job of capturing it all on video.
