He reached out to friends and neighbors asking if anyone wanted to buy some scallops, mussels, and salmon. Ten people were interested and Robert arranged to have them pick it up on his street corner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the buyers was his friend Andy Farrell, who happened to be walking by with his dog and bought a bag of mussels on the spot. He was convinced Robert was onto something. Surely there were lots of other people interested in buying fresh seafood directly from a supplier \u2014 especially now that they couldn\u2019t go out to restaurants to eat anymore. Having recently lost his job as operations director for a restaurant chain, Farrell had time on his hands and wanted to see if he could help Robert get more customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"792\" height=\"446\" src=\"https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SWS_signlephoto.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-915\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SWS_signlephoto.jpg 792w, https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SWS_signlephoto-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SWS_signlephoto-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SWS_signlephoto-120x68.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><figcaption>Robert Amar prepares freshly caught fish to sell to his customers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Drumming up interest proved easy. They floated the new business idea past friends and word of mouth quickly spread. In April, Robert started his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/garage\/digital-marketing-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-eid=\"comms.microsites.venture-forward\/link.851f28841e71d9cfb8e548883899442f\">digital marketing strategy<\/a> by creating an email newsletter to announce what seafood would be available that week, and people would mark their choices in a basic online form.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The effort gains momentum<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even as many businesses shut down because of the pandemic, the number of online microbusinesses like Robert\u2019s grew, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/img1.wsimg.com\/cdn\/Other\/All\/FOS-Intl\/1\/en-US\/19a8926c-716c-4b20-8b35-8b63badd76f7\/GoDaddyVentureForwardReport-Fall2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-eid=\"comms.microsites.venture-forward\/link.903c9dac1f6cbdf43c9fef3e926816cd\">data from Venture Forward<\/a>. So did traffic and the number of orders placed on websites, with 60% saying their digital presence helped to get going or expand their operations. And communities with more microbusinesses per 100 people recover more strongly from economic recessions, Venture Forward found.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"784\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/PhiladelphiaCallout.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1077\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, each new everyday entrepreneur like Robert adds two new jobs in a community on top of their own, the data shows, as they do things like rent trucks and build websites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Robert, business kept growing. Ten orders turned into 30 the following week, then to 80, and pretty soon, hundreds. By June, they upgraded to a larger truck, added multiple new stops to their route, and rented a sorting facility to help better manage the growing volume of orders. \u201cIt was happening very quickly,\u201d says Robert. \u201cWe really were just trying to help neighbors and friends temporarily.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/research\/explore-the-data\/\" data-eid=\"comms.microsites.venture-forward\/link.61dd1d1b63d4d9f9ee73501d721eb656\">Search Venture Forward for data about your community<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A digital marketing strategy generates growth and community<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Today Small World Seafood sells to between 800 and 1,000 customers a week across Philadelphia who pick up their orders at one of six locations. The newsletter now goes out to a list of 5,000 subscribers with weekly updates on what\u2019s available, along with recipes and a link for ordering. Customers place their orders on Wednesdays or Thursdays, depending on their location, and pick them up the following day.
