About .LAW domains

Every .LAW domain has the same requirements, restrictions, and supported features, such as registrations and renewals, transfers, and DNS.

Registrations and renewals

You must be a verified legal professional or an authorized legal institution actively licensed or recognized by an official governing body to register .LAW domains. Eligible groups include:

  • Qualified lawyers: Individuals currently licensed and authorized to practice law by an accredited regional or national regulator. Inactive or non-practicing lawyers do not qualify.
  • Law firms: Partnerships or corporations comprised of qualified lawyers providing active legal services.
  • Courts of law: Government-established bodies that handle legal disputes and justice administration.
  • Legal regulators: Official organizations like bar associations that oversee the legal profession.
  • Law schools: Educational institutions approved to train future lawyers.

Verification of eligibility is an ongoing effort maintained by the .LAW registry.

  • New registrations
    • Registration length: 1-10 years
    • Must use: 1-63 characters
    • Can use: Letters (a-z characters), numbers (0-9) and hyphens (except in the 3rd and 4th characters of the domain name)
    • Cannot use: Special characters (e.g., & or #)
    • IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names): Supported
  • Renewals
    • Renewal length: 1-10 years
    • You can manually renew your domain anytime before it expires. We'll attempt to auto-renew on the expiration date, and we'll park the domain after the first failed billing attempt. Redemption fees may be applied 12 days after expiration. Check out the standard expiration timeline for details on what happens after expiration.
