How do I set up my disk?

After creating a disk, it must be initialized, formatted, and mounted before use.

Required: Commands must be run as root or with sudo.
  1. Connect using SSH.
  2. Find the path for your new disk:
    lsblk -f
  3. In this example, we identified /dev/sdb as the path for our disk because it appears without any filesystem information, indicating it hasn't been formatted yet:
    NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID MOUNTPOINT
    sda
    ├─sda1 ext4 e51f4324-3d69-4f12-8dc7-b6a740d5e914 /
    sdb
  4. Create a partition (replace /dev/sdb with your actual disk path):
    gdisk /dev/sdb
  5. Make a new directory:
    mkdir /mnt/storage
  6. Mount your disk to your directory:
    mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/storage
  7. Identify your disk's UUID:
    lsblk -f
  8. Using your UUID, make your mount permanent:
    echo 'UUID="[your-uuid-here]" /mnt/storage xfs defaults 0 2' >> /etc/fstab
  9. Apply your changes:
    systemctl daemon-reload
  10. Mount your disk:
    mount -a
  11. Verify your changes:
    mount | grep sdb
  1. Connect using RDC.
  2. Select Start, and then select Run.
  3. In the text box, enter diskmgmt.msc, and then select OK.
  4. Right-click your disk, and then select Online. If this is your first time setting up, the entire disk will be Unallocated.
  5. Right-click your disk, select Initialize Disk, ensure GPT is selected and then select OK.
  6. Next to your disk, right-click Unallocated, and then select New Simple Volume.
  7. Select Next.
  8. Enter your partition size, and then select Next.
  9. Select the dropdown menu, select a drive letter and then select Next.
  10. Fill out the form:
    • Ensure Format the volume with the following settings is selected.
    • Ensure the File system is NTFS.
    • (Optional) Enter a Volume label in the text box.
    • Ensure Perform a quick format is selected.
