WordPress core updates on Managed WordPress

WordPress is an ever-changing ecosystem; updating your site is essential for a secure, healthy site on our Managed WordPress platform. We make that process much easier by offering automated updates for WordPress core.

Our system performs updates automatically in the background without you manually intervening.

Deployment of WordPress core updates

WordPress core updates fall into two categories: major and minor releases.

Major releases

  • These releases have new features and can break backward compatibility. For example, the planned 6.3 release in August 2023 would fit here. Or 7.0 in the future.
  • They're not deployed immediately in Managed WordPress and undergo a lengthy testing process to ensure sites are safe to upgrade. We do so for a couple of reasons:
    • This gives plugin and theme authors more time to update their code to be compatible with the new major releases.
    • Like any other major software update, there are typically a few bugs that weren't identified by WordPress when released. These are normally corrected in the subsequent minor release.
  • These releases are deployed on Managed WordPress within 2-4 weeks of the official WordPress release date or until the first minor release is available.

Minor releases

  • These are mainly security and maintenance updates that include bug and security fixes, such as the recent 6.2.1 release.
  • They are tested by WordPress briefly.
  • They are typically deployed seven days after the release date.

Choose a different WordPress core version

Note: This feature is available on our Managed WordPress V2 platform (Managed WordPress is migrating to an updated platform).

Choose a WordPress core version from a curated list of production release versions to fit your site's needs. These are well-vetted, stable releases that ensure a reliable hosting experience.

Sites hosted on Managed WordPress Deluxe and Ultimate can choose from the same list of curated WordPress core versions, release candidates, and beta versions, allowing you to experiment in a controlled staging environment (Upgrade your Managed WordPress plan).

Here's how to choose a different WordPress core version.

  1. Go to your GoDaddy product page.
  2. For the plan you want to choose a different WordPress version for, select Settings from the Menu icon menu.
  3. Under Production Site, next to WordPress version, select Change.
  4. Under WordPress Version, select the WordPress core version you want to use from the dropdown list, and then select Change.
Select the version and then change

The update process can take a few minutes to complete.
