Free domain name FAQs

How do I get a free domain name?

Purchase an annual Web Hosting plan or any annual Managed WordPress plan by GoDaddy and you’ll automatically qualify for a free domain.

Once you click Add to Cart for a hosting or WordPress plan, you’ll be given the option to select monthly or annual terms. Make sure to choose an annual term if you want to get the free domain.

Click Continue with These Options at the bottom of the page to move on to the next step. This is where you’ll see a search bar to look for the domain name you want.

Once you’ve found the name you want, just add the domain to your cart and continue to checkout.

Are there any free domain name restrictions?

Yes. You must purchase a 12, 24 or 36-month term length plan for a Web Hosting plan or a 12, 24, or 36-month term length plan for Managed WordPress for the free domain offer to be valid.

You’ll also need to choose from one of the following domain extensions: BIZ, CLUB, COM, NET, TODAY, XYZ, EMAIL, GROUP, COMPANY, ORG, CO, INFO, LIFE, LIVE, ROCKS, SPACE, SOLUTIONS. Plus, an ICANN fee of $0.18 per domain name per year.

Add the domain name to your cart before purchase, and you must select a domain term length equal to or less than the hosting term length of your plan to qualify for the free domain offer. If you purchase a domain name for a term longer than the term of the plan, you will be charged for the additional time at the then-current rate.

How do I know what domain name to choose?

That’s a great question, but there’s really no right answer. Your domain name can be whatever you want it to be. But, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, here are a few tips to help you make the best choice:

  • Make it easy to remember. This is why many businesses get domains with their business names in them. Some people even choose their business name only after they have a domain they like.
  • Check to make sure the domain name you want is not trademarked or copyrighted.
  • Shorter is usually better because it’s easier for customers to remember.
  • If you’re already established on social media (or you plan to be), you ideally want your domain name to match your Facebook page, Twitter handle, and any other social media accounts you have.
  • Got a local business? Include your neighborhood, city or country in your domain so local customers can quickly see where you are.
  • Avoid numbers or hyphens. Anyone who hears your web address won't know if you're using a numeral 5 or "five."
