About .in domains

All .in domains have the same requirements, restrictions, and supported features, such as registrations and renewals, transfers, and DNS.

Registrations and renewals

Anyone can register .in, .co.in, .firm.in, .gen.in, .ind.in, .net.in, and .org.in domains on a first-come, first-served basis.

The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has mandated that KYC (Know Your Customer) and e-KYC (Electronic KYC) must be completed for all .in domains within 7 days of registration. The KYC process verifies registrant identity to help prevent identity theft and fraud, while ensuring accurate domain ownership. Domains that fail to meet the KYC requirements will be inactive, and any connected services, such as website and email, will not work.

Required: GoDaddy uses Aadhaar to complete KYC. The registrant contact details on your domain must exactly match the Aadhaar details to successfully complete KYC. You can edit the contact details if necessary before completing KYC.

New registrations

  • Registration length: 1-10 years
  • Must use: 1-63 characters
  • Can use: Letters (a-z characters), numbers (0-9) and hyphens (except in the 3rd and 4th characters of the domain name)
  • Cannot use: Special characters (e.g., & or #)
  • IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names): Not Supported

Complete KYC verification in your GoDaddy account.

  1. Go to your GoDaddy Domain Portfolio. You might be prompted to sign in.
  2. Select Validate in the Status column for your domain.
    Required: A status of Locked For Contacts means the domain has been locked by the registry due to invalid contact details and may not be related to KYC verification. Update your registrant contact info as needed, then email NIXI at support@nixi.in to reactivate the domain.
  3. Review the current registrant contact info for your domain and confirm the details are identical to your Aadhaar documentation. Update your registrant contact info if the details do not match.
  4. Select Verify your contact after confirming the details are correct.
  5. You'll be redirected to DigiLocker to complete verification. Follow the prompts to allow access and complete the KYC process.
Note: It can take up to 24 hours for KYC verification to process. Your domain will not be functional until verification is completed.

Renewals

  • Renewal length: 1-10 years
  • You can manually renew your domain anytime before expiration. We'll attempt to auto-renew 1 day after expiration, and we'll park the domain after the first failed billing attempt. Redemption fees may be applied 19 days after expiration. Check out the standard expiration timeline for details on what happens after expiration.
