What is Tag and Deliver for Advanced Email Security?

Tag and Deliver is an email handling approach in Advanced Email Security that helps you receive more legitimate messages while still protecting you from spam and malicious content.

Instead of holding most spam and bulk email in quarantine and sending you a daily digest, Tag and Deliver delivers those messages directly to your Junk Email folder, clearly labeled with security banners so you can decide what to do next.

Malicious emails are still blocked and quarantined to keep your inbox safe.

Note: Most organizations have Tag and Deliver enabled by default, but you may need to turn it on manually. To check, sign in to your Email & Office Dashboard, and then select Advanced Email Security from the leftmost menu. If Tag & Deliver isn’t enabled, you’ll see an Update Security Settings button.

How Tag and Deliver works

With Tag and Deliver, Advanced Email Security analyzes every incoming message and handles it based on the level of risk it detects:

  • Malicious email: Messages that appear dangerous (such as phishing attempts or malware) are quarantined and blocked from delivery.
  • Spam or bulk email: Messages that are identified as spam or bulk are delivered to your Junk Email folder instead of being held in quarantine.
  • Legitimate email: Safe messages are delivered to your inbox as usual.

All delivered messages include security banners from Proofpoint that explain why the message was flagged and give you options to take action.

What changed from traditional quarantine and digest emails?

Previously, Advanced Email Security often held spam and bulk messages in quarantine and sent you a digest email so you could review and release messages manually.

With Tag and Deliver:

  • Spam and bulk email is released automatically to your Junk Email folder.
  • You no longer need to rely on a quarantine digest to find expected messages.
  • You still get clear visual indicators showing how Advanced Email Security classified the email.

This means faster access to legitimate messages without reducing your protection.

What do the banners mean?

When a message is delivered using Tag and Deliver it includes a banner at the top of the email that says, “Be Careful With This Message.” It'll tell you that the message was filtered because it was marked as spam.

Can I stop messages from going to Junk in the future?

Yes. Tag and Deliver is fully customizable.

In the upper-right corner of the banner, you can select Trust Sender to allow future messages from the sender. Your choices help Advanced Email Security learn what you consider safe, so similar messages are less likely to be sent to Junk going forward.

Is anything still quarantined?

Yes. Tag and Deliver does not reduce security.

Advanced Email Security continues to quarantine truly malicious messages, such as:

  • Phishing attempts
  • Brand impersonation
  • Messages with known malicious links or attachments

Only spam and bulk messages are automatically delivered to Junk.
