I have an unused email subscription-o365 and one which has expired. How can use the unused one for the expired version.
The godaddy rep tells me the only way is to delete the old id (after backup) and create a new one with the same name. Sounds illogical to me.

The GoDaddy rep is correct. If you'd like to use the unused account, you will have to backup the original account, including all emails and content, and then migrate it over to the new account.
Honestly, it's cheaper and less of a headache overall to just renew it. A lot can go wrong with a migration of any information, including loss of data.
