Understanding cron on Managed Hosting for WordPress
WordPress uses a scheduling system called WP-Cron (developer resource on wordpress.org) to handle automated tasks like publishing scheduled posts, checking for updates, and running backups. On Managed Hosting for WordPress, we replace the default WP-Cron with our own cron system to improve your site's performance and reliability. Here's what you need to know.
Why use a custom cron solution instead of WP-Cron?
Default WP-Cron only runs when someone visits your site, which can cause delays on low-traffic sites or resource spikes on high-traffic sites. Our cron system runs your scheduled tasks automatically at set intervals, regardless of visitor traffic.
What are the benefits for my site?
- Faster page loads: Your site doesn't pause to check for scheduled tasks during page requests.
- Reliable task execution: Critical tasks like backups and updates run on schedule every time.
- Better resource management: Scheduled tasks run during off-peak hours instead of during traffic spikes.
- Improved security: We removed public access to the wp-cron.php file to prevent potential attacks.
Do I need to do anything?
No. You don't need to do anything. Your WordPress scheduled tasks will continue to run normally, with better performance and reliability. If you're a developer, you can still use WordPress's scheduling functions (for example: wp_schedule_event, wp_cron, etc.) exactly as you usually would.
What if a plugin reports that WP-Cron is disabled?
Some plugins may display a warning that WP-Cron is disabled. This is expected and not a problem. Your scheduled tasks are still running; they're just using our more reliable cron system instead of the default WordPress method. The plugin will work normally, and you can safely ignore this warning.
