What is the point of Godaddy Backorders?

What exactly is the point of Godaddy domain backorders if the domain simply goes to public auction after it's dropped?

You pay £18.00 for a backorder and all you get from that is an opening bid of £8?

Seems like a complete con to me.

Domain Backorder is a monitoring service that tries to register the domain.  It includes the registration fee so that is it if there isn't competition for the domain.  Otherwise you would need to be the winning bid at auction.  It is active until successful, you can change to a different domain if you wish.
