SSL and Forwarding with masking

I have a domain (trusley.com) registered with GoDaddy.

I have web space elsewhere with an SSL certificate. This works correctly when addressed as: https://bitbarn.co.uk/trusley/

I set up GoDaddy DNS forwarding (permanent, WITHOUT masking) using HTTPS to this address.

I created a type A DNS record pointing to: 50.63.202.1

The "Preview" works and from outside GoDaddy the link also works perfectly and shows a secure link WITHOUT masking.

I change to "forwarding WITH masking" and the link works WITH masking but is shown as "Not secure".

How do I get forwarding WITH masking to an HTTPS address with valid and working SSL certificate?

Now I am looking for this answer and it seems Godaddy never answered you!  DId you figure out how to get https with a masked url?

Re: SSL and Forwarding with masking

Hi @jacob2071. Thanks for being part of GoDaddy Community! Our forward masking loads the target website within an iframe. Since the domain that the forwarding is on does not have an SSL certificate, it will not work with HTTPS, even though the target site might have an SSL Certificate. I hope that helps.

Re: SSL and Forwarding with masking

I don't believe that this answered the original question of "How do I do this?"

I have the same situation, and is this possible?  In this example, let's use http://www.example.com

It will be forwarded to https://extension.foo.com (which has a valid wildcard SSL cert)

I want to mask it as https://www.example.com, even if I have to purchase a SSL cert for example.com.

Is this possible?

Re: SSL and Forwarding with masking

Hi @gwolanin. Thanks for posting. To clarify, our forwarding service does not accept HTTPS requests, whether you're using masking or not. It will not resolve if someone visits https://myforwardeddomain.com. It currently only responds to HTTP requests. The only way this would ever work is if our forwarding service allowed you to install an SSL Certificate into it. If that were the case, and you had an SSL Certificate on both the forwarded and the target domain, then it would probably work. However, I don't know if that's something we'll ever add to the forwarding service. I hope that helps.

Re: SSL and Forwarding with masking

Jesse W, if Godaddy never adds a way to forward with masking while retaining the Secure status, it makes "forward with masking" pretty useless, as having a "non-secure" site is as good as having no site at all. I hope Godaddy will consider adding this feature / option.

Re: SSL and Forwarding with masking

Hi @neilebanks Thanks for the feedback. I know that this is something that is being talked about. I would agree that the missing functionality does make the forwarding service useful in fewer situations. I'll make sure we pass on the feedback to our product team.
