Back up my accounts in the Microsoft Authenticator app
Back up information on all the accounts you have in the Microsoft Authenticator app so that if you lose your phone, or get a new device, you can sign in to restore your previously saved accounts and their time-based one-time passwords (TOTP).
Select the tab that matches your device.
Previously, you needed a Microsoft personal account (like Outlook or Hotmail) to back up and restore data. However, now, account names and TOTPs are managed through iCloud Keychain and iCloud Backup. As long as iCloud Keychain and iCloud Backup are enabled on your device, you’ll be able to restore your backups.
- Make sure you have iCloud Keychain and iCloud Backup from Apple enabled on your iOS device.
- Update to iOS 17 or later.
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app. Your account information will now be saved to your iCloud Backup.
When you sign in to your Apple ID and enable iCloud Keychain, your account names and TOTP codes will appear. You’ll need to complete setup by signing in to each account.
The backup of your account names and TOTPs requires a Microsoft personal account. Your backup data will be stored in the Microsoft personal account.
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Tap
More options, and then Settings.
- Turn on the Cloud Backup toggle.
- Select a Microsoft personal account where the backup will be stored.
- Tap OK.
If you selected the wrong account or want to change the recovery account, delete the existing backup, and then create a new one.
To restore your Microsoft accounts and TOTP on a new device, open the Microsoft Authenticator app, and then select Restore from backup or Begin recovery. You’ll be prompted to sign in with your personal Microsoft account.
