Shipping can make or break a sale. Here are some key things to consider when setting up your shipping method.

Create shipping zones

A shipping zone is a geographic area that you define for your online store. This helps you set specific shipping rates and delivery times for customers based on their location. Each zone can have different rates and delivery times.

  • Local: Your city or region, for quick delivery
  • Domestic: Your country, with standard rates
  • International: Other countries, if you ship globally

If you’re offering international shipping:

  • Research customs requirements
  • Understand restricted items for each country
  • Set clear delivery timeframes (customs can cause delays)
  • Consider using services that handle customs paperwork

Offer different shipping rate options

Customers can choose if they want to pay more for quicker delivery or if they're happy to wait a little longer.

  • Standard: Economical option (for example, 5–7 days)
  • Expedited : Faster delivery (for example, 2–3 days)
  • Overnight: Premium option for urgent orders

Many successful stores offer free shipping over a minimum order amount. Calculate your costs carefully and decide if this option is viable for you.

Choose a carrier

Use a carrier that suits your location, market and product.

  • Some common carriers are USPS, UPS and FedEx. You'll also find various regional carriers in your area, which can be more cost-effective for local deliveries.
  • Some carriers offer speciality services, like live plant or fresh produce delivery. Research your options if you need these types of services.
  • Consider meeting with a shipping consultant before making your choice.

Think about packaging

Packaging should both protect your product and create a good first impression. Consider your options carefully before making a decision.

  • Will you need boxes or envelopes? If so, what size?
  • Do you need to use protective materials (bubble wrap, packing peanuts)?
  • Will you use branded packaging? (More expensive but gives a more professional impression.)
  • What are the packaging weight limits for your different shipping methods?
  • Does your product require specialized packaging, like for live plants or fresh produce?

Test your setup before launch

Make sure shipping calculates correctly for your different customers and locations.

  • Calculate shipping for different cart sizes.
  • Test each shipping option you offer.
  • Verify that customers have access to tracking information.
  • Check that rates cover your actual costs.
