Can't log in to Wordpress without updating database

I updated Wordpress and my Divi site gave a 500 error and wouldnt load. I created a new directory, with a previous backup, and pointed to that. The site is up now, though when I try to log in to wordpress, I get a "update database" message and can't log in without updating. I'm afraid doing so will bring the 500 error back.

I tried renaming the plugin folder, but that didn't help. I'd rather not link to the site, though I can if needed. Thank you for any suggestions as to how to log in to wordpress without updating the database.

The database update is part of the 5.5 update and should be able to be processed without issue - the 500 error is usually due to a permissions or file issue - you would have to check the error log to see what the specific error is
