Key takeaways
- As AI adoption grows, understanding its true economics — beyond token price — is essential for making informed engineering and business decisions.
- Evaluating AI cost means looking at the full workflow: quality, performance, and the resources required to deliver a useful result.
- The Tokenomics Foundation, hosted by the Linux Foundation, launched on August 4, 2026, to develop open standards, benchmarks, and best practices for AI cost and value measurement.
- The Foundation's roadmap includes common terminology, full-cost measurement frameworks, and improved AI cost reporting through the FinOps FOCUS specification.
- As a founding member, GoDaddy is contributing its cloud and infrastructure cost optimization experience to help build practical standards for sustainable AI adoption.
As businesses build with AI, understanding its economics becomes an engineering and business priority. How do we compare the cost and performance of different models? How do we attribute spending to the products and workloads generating it? And how do we connect that investment to meaningful outcomes and business value?
The answers require looking beyond the price of a token. A model with a lower token price may need more attempts or human review to complete a task, increasing the overall cost. Making an informed choice means evaluating the entire workflow, including quality, performance, and the resources needed to deliver a useful result.
Why shared standards matter
Shared standards can give teams a consistent way to make those comparisons. That opportunity caught our attention during discussions at FinOps X in June 2026, shortly after the Linux Foundation announced its intent to establish the Tokenomics Foundation. We immediately recognized its potential to influence how organizations build, operate, and scale AI. With strong support from our leadership, we took the initiative to bring GoDaddy into the effort.
On August 4, 2026, the Tokenomics Foundation officially launched, with GoDaddy as a founding member. Hosted by the Linux Foundation, it brings organizations together to develop open standards, benchmarks, and best practices for understanding AI costs and measuring the value they create.
The foundation’s roadmap reflects the breadth of that challenge. It includes common terminology, methods for measuring the full cost of AI, frameworks for connecting spending to business outcomes, and improved AI cost reporting through the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS). These efforts aim to give engineering, finance, and business teams a shared basis for evaluating AI investments.
How GoDaddy’s real-world experience helps
For us, participation is a natural extension of our cloud and infrastructure cost optimization work at GoDaddy. We look forward to contributing that experience, exchanging ideas with other members and the community, and helping shape practical standards grounded in the needs of teams operating real systems.
Clearer measures of cost and value can help engineers choose models, design workflows, and experiment with confidence. They can also help businesses direct investment toward AI applications that deliver measurable results. As a founding member, GoDaddy has an opportunity to help build that foundation for sustainable AI adoption.
