Facebook marketing tips from social media thought leader, Mari Smith [video]

Chatting with the 'Queen of Facebook'

As a savvy business owner, you understand that using Facebook is a great way to expand your reach and grow your business. You have a business page, and you’re probably posting regularly. Why then, are you not seeing results? And how are we supposed to keep up with the latest changes when it seems like every other day Facebook is announcing new updates and add-ons? It can be exhausting, but don’t worry — Mari Smith has answers.

Often referred to as “the Queen of Facebook,” Mari Smith teaches businesses and brands to become truly social businesses with measurable profits by integrating proven social media marketing strategies. She is Facebook’s designated “Small Business and Facebook Marketing Expert” (we talked about the day she received that call), and she is the author of The New Relationship Marketing and coauthor of Facebook Marketing: An Hour a Day.

Getting to know Mari Smith

Mari Smith Interview

“The challenge is a lot of small businesses in 2016 are trying to use tactics that worked in 2012.” ~ Mari Smith

I’ve been a fan of Mari’s for years, and she was on the list of influencers I wanted to interview. So when I saw her at Content Marketing Institute’s event, Content Marketing World, I immediately rushed over to her to schedule some time to chat. I was thrilled when she agreed — and I’m pleased to share that she is as delightful in person as she is online.

During our conversation (that fittingly took place in the Blogger’s Lounge at Content Marketing World), Mari talked about:

  • Why small businesses should invest in Facebook advertising and how much to spend (it’s probably less than you think).
  • How to increase organic reach on Facebook. Hint: Video. As Mary said:
“Video gets three times the engagement, yet only about 1 percent of the posts from brands and businesses are video.”

  • Various ways to use Facebook private messenger to build better connections with prospects, clients and fans.

Clearly, Mari is extremely passionate about helping small businesses succeed using various Facebook marketing strategies. Her eyes lit up when she started talking about leveraging live video and Facebook messenger. “I highly encourage businesses to include a call-to-action inviting people to message them privately,” Mari said. “And now, with the ability to message and talk to people real time while live streaming video, it’s the next best thing to interacting in person.”

Business owners are constantly trying to figure out how to ensure their content will actually be seen by their prospects, clients and fans. They try various tactics including posting more often, posting at different times of the day, or adding video into the mix. And while some of these practices may help slightly, the challenge is that the organic reach of a business’s Facebook page is only between 1 percent and 6 percent. No wonder people aren’t seeing our content!

But there is hope.

According to Mari, the good news is that it doesn’t take a huge budget to get results. Business owners can start with as little as $1 to $10 per day on Facebook advertising to expand their reach and increase engagement. Plus, Facebook provides the most targeted traffic you can buy so we can be confident the right people are seeing our content.

I hope you enjoy this interview and are able to walk away with a few new strategies to try today. Check out our conversation here:
