Marketing tricks to score Halloween sales [infographic]

Carve out more commerce

Some might say that Halloween is the most exciting holiday of the year. Spooky costumes, carving pumpkins, and ghoulish makeup galore! But truth be told, there’s more to this holiday than just playing dress-up and handing out candy. If you’re a marketer, you can bank on Halloween sales because Americans are looking to spend the big bucks this year.

That’s right, total spending for Halloween is expected to reach $8.4 billion, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics. This is an all-time high in the 11-year history of the survey.

Halloween sales by the numbers

That seems like a large number to wrap our heads around, so let’s break it down. The average spend expected for each U.S. consumer is $82.93 (up from $74.34 last year). When you pair these numbers with the amount of Americans celebrating Halloween this year — more than 171 million, you can see how Halloween sales become a major focus for online and brick-and-mortar stores.

Halloween is THE holiday to get creative with your marketing

No one wants to be a bore on Halloween — whether it’s dressing up for a party, hosting one, or handing out candy — we all want to make a fun and lasting impression. This is why Halloween is not just reserved for companies that sell costumes and candy. You just have to get creative and hack the holiday.

When it comes to celebrating, here is what people are doing for Halloween:

  • 71 percent are handing out candy
  • 49 percent are decorating
  • 47 percent are dressing in costumes
  • 34 percent are throwing parties
  • 30 percent are trick-or-treating
  • 21 percent are going to a haunted house
  • 16 percent are dressing up their pets

Based on these breakdowns, working with influencers is the perfect way to showcase your product’s DIY spin for Halloween. Some fun DIY blog and social media posts include: out-of-box family costumes, a day at the pumpkin patch and pumpkin-carving tutorials with kids, makeups and costume videos, fun guides for hosting parties, ghoulish recipes, and even DIY haunted houses.

Halloween is the perfect opportunity to treat your customers to special offers and offerings — so get creative to drum up those Halloween sales!
