You want to know a secret? How about insider information on how you can move your website up in rank for all your important keywords? Ya, we thought you’d be interested.
We all know Google® holds all the keys when it comes to its algorithms. They are the holder of the secret formula on how rankings work. But luckily, there are a few of us who continuously test boundaries and discover some of the hidden ranking factors. One company that leads the way on this effort is SearchMetrics, which makes an enterprise SEO platform for large companies just like GoDaddy. Marcus Tober, leader of the team at SearchMetrics, annually develops a list of search engine ranking factors which shows correlation to rank improvements.
Harness the power of social media
Through the research at SearchMetrics we can see the correlations they discovered. We know that seven of the top 10 ranking factors now involve social media. So, if you’ve been avoiding getting social, now is the time to create your accounts and get the ball rolling. GoDaddy happens to have a great tool for creating/syncing your accounts with Get Found. This tool will align all of your current social media accounts with the ones you’re missing. The result will be a fully controlled presence that you can manage on a regular basis.
Now that we know that social media influences rankings, what are you going to do about it? Sure, it’s one more thing to add to the already growing lists of chores, but the reality is that this particular activity can grow your customers by a tremendous amount — outside of the fact that it can help your rankings.
The solution here is stay active on Google+™, Facebook®, and Twitter® at a minimum. You don’t have to post every day, and in most cases you can autopost from one account to another.
Links are still a factor
Awww, who could forget our little link friends? This year it looks like the value of a backlink is still very high. I know a lot of you hate trying to get people to link to your websites… It’s always been a problem and continues to plague people’s time. But it doesn’t have to be that way if you change your mode of thought.
Rather than spending time contacting hordes of webmasters, why not develop some really great content? Case in point is the study we’re talking about in this article. This ranking factor list has been copied and linked to by thousands of people. It’s a valuable resource — and as you can see by this article, we did in fact provide a link back.
What if you could create something that would be interesting to your industry? Could you create an infographic? Could you create a white paper that proves something about your industry? Or could you partner with another company to produce a noteworthy document that could be shared by others?
Content is king
We talked about links and social media, but what about content? Content is still a massive part of Google’s algorithm. Some would say the most important piece. No matter what your position is on content, we know a couple things about it:
- You need unique and compelling content on your pages.
- Each page should have somewhere between 300 and 1,000 words of content.
- Your content should be intelligent and well written.
Without those core principles your website will flop around without any real substantial Google traffic.
Heartfelt note to drop shippers and resellers: If you who don’t really have product of your own and you rely on manufacturers to provide content for your pages, please stop using that boilerplate stuff and develop content that is specifically yours. You’ll find that you will get much better rankings and pass your competition faster if you have something that is unique to your website. I know some of you are saying, “but I have thousands of pages,” and I hear you… but if you changed three pages of content a day you could blow through a thousand pages in a year. Just something to think about.
