“It's a bit riskier if you just post questions and hope that your audience is there and engaged but less risky if you create a panel of experts who will post a response to every question.”

As an example below, Content Marketing Institute’s #CMWorld chat about common link building mistakes featured Theifels because she’s a link-building expert.

Additionally, Dr. Strayhorn noted their internal research and monitoring suggests Twitter chats with guests have higher participation rates. Guest panelists also bring additional exposure by promoting the chat via their network and followers.

Pro tip: Give your guest panelists the questions ahead of time, so they can prepare thoughtful answers then converse with participants as they respond.

5. Find the right time

When does it make sense to hold your Twitter chats based on your audience? You want a convenient time where participants can log in and engage. For professional topics, hold a lunchtime chat so that people can hop on during their break.

For chats related to personal interests, you might pick an evening or weekend time slot.

You’ll also want to consider frequency. When starting out, try monthly or quarterly chats. Large organizations with substantial followings have weekly chats.
